Job Description

Duties: 

  • Processes crime scenes to include photography, evidence collection, and latent print recovery;
  • Collects, preserves, and transports physical evidence from various events during crime scene investigations, which includes latent fingerprints, trace evidence, biological evidence, narcotics, firearms, and other weapons;
  • Uses a digital SLR camera and other photographic equipment during crime scene investigations and laboratory analysis;
  • Uses specialized photographic techniques such as time-exposures in low-light settings, alternate light source photography, macro photography of latent prints and other trace evidence, and footwear or tire track impression photography using various types of photographic equipment;
  • attends autopsies of victims and/or suspects for photographing, collecting and preserving evidence;
  • photographs and processes victims, suspects, and vehicles of crimes for evidence;
  • Examines items of evidence in the field or the laboratory for latent fingerprints and trace evidence using a combination of laser/alternative light source techniques, print powders, and chemicals;
  • Evaluate latent prints and enter the prints into a recognized Automated Fingerprint Identification System;
  • Prepares reports for work performed in the field or the laboratory;
  • Appears in court as an expert witness regarding the collection and processing of physical evidence;
  • May provide training to Forensic Evidence Technicians, Laboratory Interns, and Police Officers;
  • May provide education to the public and participate in public relations events.

Experience

Education: Completion of two years of study at a recognized college or university with a major or significant course work in evidence technology, criminalistics or a closely related field. An internship in a forensic laboratory is highly desirable. Experience: At least six months experience in evidence technology or criminalistics or a closely related field. Special Requirements: Possession of or ability to obtain, prior to employment, a valid Class C California driver’s license with a safe driving record
