Job Description

$5,526.00 to $7,053.00 every month. 

 

Duties:

  • Receives, searches, books, fingerprints, and photographs incoming prisoners. Issues jail uniforms, records and stores personal effects, and houses inmates by appropriate classification.
  • Maintains jail security by observation of inmates, pat searches, strip searches, and cell searches. Maintains orderly conduct and discipline.
  • Assures that inmates have access to basic needs for hygiene and welfare.
  • Prepares and delivers prisoners to court, doctors' offices, hospitals, and other locations. Transfers prisoners to and from jail and court. Releases prisoners by established procedures or bail, court order, or other authority.
  • Logs court disposition of cases. Writes reports and maintains files.
  • Screens and processes visitors. Processes personal property brought to inmates and released.
  • Assigns and directs work of trustees. Distributes meals to all inmates, assuring that all materials are removed from cells after meals.
  • Advises superior when medical attention appears necessary and maintains physical safety of prisoners. Administers prescribed medications.
  • Monitors video and audio surveillance equipment and other job-related equipment.
  • Receives incoming telephone calls to the department, relaying them as appropriate. Communicates appropriately on the telephone.
  • Attends training and shift meetings. Applies job-related knowledge, skills, and abilities on duty.
  • Responds to and assists with major or minor disturbances, medical crisis situations, escapes, fire, and other natural disasters.
  • Prepares reports, memos, log book entries, and unit rosters. This is accomplished through handwritten, typed, and computer terminal entries.
  • Performs related work as required.

​The Sheriff's Office is responsible for providing police services in the unincorporated areas of Thurston County and for processing orders of the court throughout the County. The Sheriff manages the County jail and all law enforcement activities.

Providing evidence based and/or best practice inmate programming, addressing areas of mental illness, chemical dependency, anger management, job skills, basic education, and transitional/re-entry case management in an attempt to positively modify cognitive thinking and behaviors thereby, reducing criminal behaviors and recidivism.

 

Every day the Thurston County Corrections Facility provides services to approximately 425 inmates, as well as the many attorneys, friends, and family members who visit them.  In addition to those incarcerated in our jail, we process over 20 new bookings and releases daily.

Experience

High School Diploma or GED; U.S. Citizen, lawful permanent resident, or Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient; no felony convictions or series of offenses of a minor nature which would lend themselves to establish a pattern of criminal behavior, nor any criminal instances concerning moral turpitude; minimum age of 21 years at time of appointment; must hold or obtain a valid Washington State Driver's License; ability to read, write and speak the English language as required by RCW 41.14.100.Must have a current and valid CJTC recognized Corrections Officer Certification issued from another state-approved academy and have the ability to obtain an equivalency certification within the first twelve (12) months of employment by meeting the standards of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Have successfully completed the testing process and been hired by another jurisdiction from a civil service commission certified eligibility list or other like process. Have at least 12-months continuous work experience and successfully completed any probationary period as a full-time, paid, Corrections Deputy with general corrections experience. From the most recent corrections agency, the applicant must have no more than a 12-month break in service. Pass a written examination and pass a physical fitness test.
