Job Description
- Provides Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) in accordance to Massachusetts 560 CMR 5.05 – gathers information through the use of various charts in order to: obtain information to determine the type of medical emergency, provide accurate and helpful information regarding patient history and current medical situation to emergency responders, provide potentially lifesaving medical and pre-arrival instructions to the caller in order to help treat the patient prior to emergency responder arrival. Must maintain EMD certification. Recertification every two (2) years.
- Provides Law Enforcement Dispatch (LED) and Fire Service Dispatch (FSD) where applicable.
- Maintains warrants, restraining and harassment prevention orders and enters them into IMC and/or NCIC.
- Issue burning permits on behalf of the fire department, collect funds associated with them and enter information into the computer. Will also be responsible for activating the permits during the burning season.
- Gather completed firearms applications and schedule appointments
- Schedule car seat safety inspection appointments
- Maintain two way radio contact with the Water and Highway Department
- Use surveillance cameras to monitor areas of the Town, including but not limited to; the Public Safety building, the Town Hall, the transfer station, the Ellis Road and Shady Ave water tanks, Hager Park pump station and various parking lots
- Maintains the schedule for use of the conference and training rooms for employees and citizens Prepares and distributes information to the public regarding, but not limited to, crash and incident reports
- Monitors telephone and radio communications; answers and refers calls; responds to all emergencies, complaints and requests received; completes and maintains dispatch software (IMC) and dispatches vehicles and personnel; keeps supervisory personnel aware of priority calls and equipment status.
- Assumes responsibility for monitoring local public safety frequencies from adjacent communities or public safety agencies; communicates via telephone or radio with other agencies such as utility companies, alarm services, ambulance companies, town and state highway departments, animal control officers, towing agencies, courts, bail commissioners, hospitals, and water departments, etc.
- Assists the general public, furnishing information or making appropriate referrals; relays animal calls to the on-duty police officer(s) or Animal Control Officer (according to policies and procedures)
- Handles all transactions on the OpenFox system; maintains accurate, detailed records, logs and other pertinent information; prepares and files reports and statistics such as incident reports, offense reports, additional information reports, motor vehicle accident reports, etc. as required.
- Acts as an informational resource person to the police department for the transferring of general broadcasts received via monitor, intercity radio, or telecommunications on missing persons, stolen motor vehicles, and miscellaneous criminal activity.
- Maintains two way radio communications between the police and fire departments and dispatches police, fire and EMS personnel.
- Monitors and receives burglar, intrusion, fire and panic alarms for an individual occupancy or building or for a group of buildings.
- Performs various clerical functions including data entry computer work, typing, transcribing, filing, and maintenance of records; prepares and maintains up to date telephone listings, including confidential listings for hospitals, veterinarians, medical examiners, law enforcement agencies, police, and fire personnel, court personnel, public transportation, and utilities, and local businesses; prepares and maintains up to date street locations and residency listing for use by police, fire, and medical emergency personnel.
- Coordinates with the highway department during snow removal (i.e. motor vehicle removals, school closings and delays).
- Obtain computer generated records at the request of police officers; submits appropriate reports via OpenFox/NCIC, etc.
- Maintains keys to various buildings in the town
- Performs similar or related work as required or as situation dictates.
- Maintains cleanliness and order in Dispatch Center.
- May be required to train new dispatchers.
- Maintains dispatching equipment and computers as a user.

Must have a High School diploma or equivalent; a minimum of one (1) year of prior work experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
