Ohio Investigative Unit agents are charged with enforcing Ohio’s liquor laws, portions of the Ohio Revised Code and the regulations of the Liquor Control Commission. OIU Agents investigate suspected illegal activity in and around liquor permit premises such as bars, restaurants, and carry-outs as well as SNAP retailers and individual recipients.
- Enforcement Agents may work independently or joint criminal and administrative investigations. Agents often work in a plain clothes capacity, however many operations require agents conduct enforcement in an overt status.
- Investigations may be related to locations operating without a permit, selling illegal items, drugs, gambling, weapons, property crimes, human trafficking, and other criminal activity. Agents also investigate the illegal manufacture of alcohol, as well as businesses and individuals involved in food stamp fraud.
- The unit has an expanded core mission beyond these violations that includes illegal weapons, drug trafficking, manufacturing false identification, tobacco sales, gambling, human trafficking, and prostitution.
- OIU is committed to making businesses and locations safe for patrons, employees, and the general public. OIU regularly conducts inspections on businesses for compliance and violent crime reduction details aimed at reducing violent crimes occurring in and around locations. Related activities also include compliance checks to ensure liquor permit premises are not selling alcohol or tobacco products to underage individuals.
- OIU also conducts trace-back investigations to determine whether alcohol was illegally sold or provided to an underage or already-intoxicated person involved in an alcohol-related crash or incident. This program is aimed to improve traffic safety by holding those accountable that may have served alcohol illegally resulting in traffic crashes and fatalities on Ohio’s roadways.
- OIU agents are members of various task forces throughout the state of Ohio and contribute to various local law enforcement agencies when requested through their already established scope of authority or memorandum of understandings.
- Agent duties involve training new agents, presentations, education, report writing, court testimony, interviews and interrogations, and other related duties as assigned.
Company Information
The Ohio Investigative Unit enforces Ohio’s alcohol, tobacco, and food stamp fraud laws. OIU agents are responsible for investigating violations relating to the liquor control act as well as criminal activity in or around liquor permit locations (bars, restaurants, carryouts, etc.) and illegal establishments.
Experience
Be a United States Citizen Must be 21 years of age Possess a high school diploma or GED Be a resident of Ohio at time of appointment Possess a valid Ohio Driver’s License The applicant must meet the minimum standards and successfully pass each phase to move forward: Online application Physical fitness assessment Knowledge assessment test Panel interview and writing sample Polygraph Examination Background Investigation Psychological Assessment Medical Examination/Drug Screen Candidates who are not OPOTA Certified will be required to attend an Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy
